What is Nordic Walking?

Nordic Walking uses specially designed poles to enhance your natural walking experience.  With a technique that is similar to the upper body action of classic cross country skiing, Nordic Walking is a whole body exercise that can be enjoyed at many levels, from walking for health to athletic Nordic running.  More than 10 million people globally enjoy this outdoor activity all year round.

How will it benefit my body?

Nordic Walking combines the simplicity and accessibility of walking with simultaneous core and upper body conditioning similar to Nordic skiing.  The result is a full body workout, which means that you:

  • burn up to 46% more calories compared to walking without poles
  • release tension in the neck and shoulders
  • improve your posture and gait
  • strengthen your back and abdominal muscles
  • reduce the  impact on the joints

And because Nordic Walking doesn’t feel like hard work you’ll be happy to walk further and for longer.

Fitness Nordic Walks

A weekly ‘Fitness Nordic Walk’ in Wilby is a great opportunity to enjoy the fresh air, get fit and connect with others.  The aim of these walks is to improve personal fitness and stamina through regular walking with poles. The group meets each Friday afternoon at 1pm to do a walk of 3-4 miles in length, following the same route over a number of weeks with the aim of improving our pace.

Please note that you need to be familiar with the Nordic Walking technique in order to participate in Nordic Fitness Walks. Poles may be borrowed if you don’t have your own.  The cost of a 5-week block is £25 (£5 per walk) with a small booking fee to pay in addition to the advertised price.  If you aren’t able to attend all 5 sessions, you can book individual sessions at a cost of £7 (plus booking fee) per walk.
